A tragic incident occurred at a construction site in Russia’s Leningrad region, resulting in the deaths of two Uzbek citizens. The workers were reportedly buried under a collapsed concrete wall during ongoing construction, reported Zamin.uz.
Authorities confirmed that a third individual, a 37-year-old Uzbek man, was seriously injured and has been hospitalized. His condition remains critical as doctors continue life-saving efforts.
According to early investigations, the deceased were working illegally in Russia. They were not officially registered, lacked work permits or contracts, and had not received proper safety training.
Inspections at the scene revealed numerous safety violations: unstable structures, lack of protective equipment for workers, and non-compliance with safety protocols. The construction site has been sealed off pending a full investigation.
A criminal case has been launched, and responsible figures from the employer company are being questioned. Russian officials stressed the need for tighter control over undocumented labor activities.
Uzbekistan’s Agency for External Labor Migration has issued a statement confirming the incident and is currently working to identify the victims and contact their families. Legal and material support will be provided through diplomatic channels.
The incident sparked concern and grief among the public. Once again, it has brought attention to the vulnerabilities of migrant workers and the importance of safe, legal employment.
Every individual has the right to work, but that right must be protected by law, safety, and dignity. Uzbek citizens seeking employment abroad are encouraged to use official channels and understand their rights and available consular support.
