Tensions Rise Again Between the Koreas
Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, sharply rejected peace proposals made by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. This marked Pxenyan’s first official response to the new president and reaffirmed that tensions between the two Koreas have not eased.

"If South Korea expects to reverse all the consequences of (its actions) with a few sentimental words, there could be no greater miscalculation than that," Kim said.

After assuming the presidency in June, Lee Jae Myung attempted to improve relations between the two countries. He halted anti-North Korean propaganda broadcasts. However, Pxenyan does not view these actions as a serious step.

In response to Kim Yo Jong’s remarks, South Korea’s Ministry of Unification issued a statement stressing that efforts to restore trust with Pxenyan will continue. Ministry spokesperson Koo Byoung Sam said, “These remarks show that the wall of distrust between the two sides remains high.”

President Lee referred to the military alliance with the U.S. as a “blood-sealed alliance” and emphasized its strengthening. This statement came amid ongoing trade negotiations with the U.S.

There is still no formal peace treaty between North and South Korea. The 1950–1953 Korean War ended only with a ceasefire. Today, the prospects for trust and dialogue between the two nations remain as complex as ever.
