According to international food security experts under UN sponsorship, the worst-case scenario of famine is currently unfolding in the Gaza Strip. The IPC (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification) report states that food shortages and severe malnutrition levels in Gaza City have reached famine thresholds.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the situation a “humanitarian catastrophe unfolding before our eyes.” He stressed that aid should arrive not in “drips,” but in “waves.”
In March, Israel announced a total blockade on aid and trade shipments. The military offensive continues. Although international pressure has led to a partial easing of the blockade, shortages of food and medicine have worsened. While Israel claims there are no obstacles to aid delivery, the UN insists otherwise. Gaza residents say aid is not reaching communities, and some are dying of hunger.
In July alone, over 60 children were reported to have died from hunger. According to IPC data, over 20,000 children were hospitalized for severe malnutrition between April and July.
There is also a rise in attacks on aid convoys, looting of humanitarian goods, and resale of supplies at high prices in local markets. The Israeli government blames Hamas, but there is no verified evidence supporting these claims so far.
UN agencies are demanding immediate large-scale food assistance even without a formal declaration of famine. They say only a ceasefire can ensure aid reaches those in need.
