At least 25 people were killed in Ukraine after Russian air strikes were launched overnight and early on 29 July. The deadliest hit was on the Bilenke prison in Zaporizhzhia region — 16 inmates were killed and more than 50 were injured.
The Ministry of Justice said four bombs hit the prison, destroying the dining hall, administrative building, and quarantine area. 44 people were taken to hospital. Ukraine's human rights commissioner called the attack on the prison a gross violation of international humanitarian law.
In Kharkiv region five people were killed in a rocket strike as they gathered for humanitarian aid. In Dnipropetrovsk region, a missile strike on a hospital killed three people, including a 23-year-old pregnant woman.
President Zelensky said tough sanctions were needed to force Russia into peace. "These attacks are happening when a ceasefire could already be in place," he said.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced an 8 August deadline for Russia to reach a truce. Otherwise, sweeping economic sanctions may follow.
Russia claimed its forces had advanced deeper into Ukrainian territory. Moscow said it had captured the village of Maliivka, but Kyiv denied the claim.
