A very unusual event occurred in the Chinese city of Shanghai: not a human, but a robot joined the ranks of doctoral program students in the field of theater and cinema. Its name is Xueba 01, which translates from Chinese as “Excellent Student”. This was reported by Peopletalk.
Xueba 01 is a 175 cm tall, 30 kg robot based on artificial intelligence, capable of communicating with humans, expressing facial expressions and emotions. The Shanghai University of Science and Technology and the company DroidUp Robotics participated in its development.
The most interesting part is that the robot will study theater art, acting skills, and the fundamentals of dramaturgy over the next four years. In addition, it aims to write scripts and creatively collaborate with human actors.
Professor Yan Qingqing has been appointed as the scientific supervisor of Xueba 01. According to her, this project is seen not just as cooperation between humans and machines, but as an aesthetic dialogue between different types of beings.
“Xueba 01’s communication with classmates is not just a meeting between a robot and a human, but a reflection and emotional exchange in a new form of art,” the professor said.
