UN Secretary-General: “The number of meetings and reports is exhausting both the system and ourselves”

The global organization — the United Nations (UN) — has revealed critical information in a new report prepared to increase operational efficiency and reduce costs: hardly anyone reads the reports it produces. This was reported by Pravilamag.

According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in 2024 the organization held 27,000 meetings involving nearly 240 different bodies. In addition, the UN Secretariat prepared 1,100 official reports, which is 20% more than in 1990.

“The volume of meetings and reports is pushing the system — and us — to the limit,” said Guterres.

He emphasized that most of these reports do not receive adequate attention. Only 5% of the most popular reports were downloaded more than 5,500 times. One in five reports was downloaded fewer than 1,000 times.

“Downloading does not mean the report has been read,” he added.

To solve this issue, in March 2025 Guterres formed a special task force called “UN80”. The goal of this group is to reform the organization's operations to meet modern demands.

Guterres also highlighted another serious problem — financial shortfalls. He stated that for the past seven years, the UN has been experiencing a persistent liquidity crisis due to the fact that not all of the 193 member states pay their mandatory contributions in full and on time.

“Fewer meetings. Fewer reports,” concluded Guterres.
