According to The Independent, approximately five thousand people have already been infected with the virus. This situation has seriously mobilized the public and health authorities in China.
This dangerous type of fever spreads through specific viruses and is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus causes severe joint pain in the human body, which over time can lead to serious neurological complications. It is the severity of the disease and the lack of treatment that make it even more dangerous.
In just the past week, more than 2,800 new cases have been reported in China’s Guangdong province. This indicates that the virus is continuing to spread rapidly. In this regard, the US authorities have officially warned their citizens planning to travel to China, Bloomberg reported. This warning clearly reflects the seriousness of the virus and its geopolitical impact.
However, the Chinese government is not one to sit idly by in the face of problems. Scientists are testing a unique approach to eliminating Aedes mosquitoes, the main spreaders of the virus. They have created genetically modified "cannibal" mosquitoes, which possess mutant characteristics.
These mutant mosquitoes consume the larvae of Aedes mosquitoes, thus preventing their reproduction. In this way, they aim to eliminate the source of the chikungunya virus, which is spreading on a large scale. This scientific approach is viewed as one of the promising steps in the fight against the virus.
If this biotechnology strategy proves effective, it could become a globally viable method of combating chikungunya in the future.
