Political crisis in Texas: governor seeks to remove Democrats from office

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court to remove Democratic lawmakers who tried to block a redistricting plan favoring Republicans. He specifically accused one of the Democratic Party leaders, Gene Wu, of attempting to "hijack" the government.

According to Abbott, the departure of more than 50 Democrats from the state and their refusal to return to the session amounts to abandonment of office, and this could be grounds for their dismissal.

The case is being considered under “quo warranto” – a rarely used legal mechanism that determines whether an official legally holds office. The lawsuit includes a request to remove Gene Wu from his position. Republican supporters aim to resume the session and change the electoral boundaries.

Gene Wu called the move a violation of constitutional rights and said his absence from the session is an act of political protest and a defense of the law.

The Texas Supreme Court is currently reviewing the case, and a decision is expected before Friday’s session. It is noted that all 9 justices are from the Republican Party, and the Chief Justice previously served as Abbott’s legal counsel. This raises concerns about potential political bias in the court’s decision.
