US–Russia negotiations in Moscow: Is Witkoff's visit a "path to peace"?

A new event has emerged on the political stage. US President's special representative Steven Witkoff arrived in Moscow to hold important negotiations with the Russian leadership, reports reuters.com. This became known on Wednesday morning, August 6. Witkoff landed at Vnukovo airport and was met by Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, who participates in negotiations concerning the war in Ukraine.

Prior to this visit, US President Donald Trump had given the Russian leadership a 10-day deadline to halt military operations in Ukraine and also announced Witkoff's trip to Moscow. According to Trump, Moscow invited Witkoff to the meeting, and these negotiations have significant political importance. “They invited him to a meeting. So, we'll see what happens,” said Trump. It should be noted that the US President’s set ultimatum ends in two days.

If Moscow does not agree to a peace agreement, Trump said sanctions would be imposed. However, he also admitted that Russia has significant experience in circumventing sanctions. “We’ll see what happens. Moscow needs to make a deal and put an end to people dying,” said the American leader. Referring to stopping wars in various regions, Trump noted: “We have stopped wars in many countries. We will stop this war too, and someone has to do it.”

According to available information, Witkoff already earlier this year — in February, March, and April — held several rounds of negotiations in Moscow.

In conclusion, it can be said that these negotiations are arousing great interest in world politics. In the coming days, the main question everyone is asking is how the peace process will develop.

We will watch the outcome of the negotiations together.
