Weight loss marathon among employees in China – $140 reward per 1 kg lost

One of China’s major technology companies – Insta360 – has launched an unusual and interesting initiative to encourage its employees to maintain a healthy lifestyle. According to Shanghai City News Service, the company introduced a challenge called “Lose Weight and Earn Money,” in which each employee who loses weight receives 500 yuan (about $70) for every 500 grams lost.

The rule – motivation and responsibility at the same time

The most interesting aspect of the project is that if someone, on the contrary, gains weight, the company charges them 800 yuan ($112) for every 500 grams gained. This rule serves employees not only as a financial incentive but also as a serious reason to monitor their health.

Results and rewards

A total of 99 employees participated in the challenge, collectively losing 950 kilograms. They received a total of 1 million yuan ($139,000) in prize money. Most notably, no one had to pay a penalty. According to Insta360 representatives, the aim of the initiative is to promote a healthy lifestyle and strengthen a positive attitude toward life and work.

Inspiring experiences

On social media, this idea sparked great interest. Many users urged their companies to adopt such a program. A similar initiative was previously implemented by Wonderlab, a food supplements manufacturer in Guangdong Province. In a one-month weight loss contest, 224 employees collectively lost about 750 kilograms and shared 171,000 yuan ($23,800) in prize money. The top participant lost 16.4 kilograms and earned 7,600 yuan ($1,059).

Alignment with the national health strategy

These programs align with the three-year plan of China’s National Health Commission for scientific weight control and combating obesity. According to national statistics, in 2023, 57% of China’s adult population were overweight or obese. In 2018, this figure was 51%, and in 2013 – 46%. If effective measures are not taken, by 2030 this figure may reach 65%. At the same time, healthcare costs related to obesity may rise to 418 billion yuan, representing 22% of China’s total healthcare expenditures.
