In India’s financial capital, Mumbai, heavy rainfall has flooded roads and disrupted transport and flights. Many parts of the city are under waist- and knee-deep water, and some residents had to wade through submerged streets.
Local authorities rescued 600 people stranded on a water route, 23 of whom needed treatment for oxygen deprivation. Additionally, 350 people from low-lying areas were temporarily moved to shelters.
Mumbai’s local trains and international airport faced delays and cancellations, causing difficulties for thousands of residents.
Experts say the rains exposed the city’s infrastructure and protection systems as inadequate for the growing population. Therefore, despite new bridges and metro lines, preventing flooding and traffic jams remains difficult.
Local politicians and residents blame the government for being unprepared. Despite the weather, citizens are advised to follow safety measures and move to temporary shelters.
