Xi Jinping’s army purges: high-ranking generals disappear

In China, during President Xi Jinping’s third term, major changes are taking place within the army. According to Bloomberg, of the 79 generals personally appointed by him, 14 have recently disappeared from public view or have been subjected to various investigations. Analysts emphasize that such a situation has not been observed for the past twenty years.

The highest-ranking missing figure is He Weidong, the deputy commander of the Central Military Forces. There is no exact information about his fate, although some media outlets report that his name may be linked to a corruption case. However, this has not yet been officially confirmed.

As a result of extensive purges, the composition of the top governing body of China’s army — the Central Military Commission — has been sharply reduced. Currently, only four members remain out of seven. This is considered the lowest figure since the era of Mao Zedong.

According to Bloomberg’s analysis, Xi Jinping aims to further consolidate his personal power through such repressions and reshuffles. However, experts note that the removal of key military leaders may cast doubt on the readiness of the armed forces, particularly in the context of a possible conflict over Taiwan.

Furthermore, many international observers link this process to Xi’s pursuit of internal political stability. But in practice, it remains unclear what impact these moves will have on the overall capability of the Chinese army.
