UN launches new network for safe migration in Pakistan

A new initiative has been implemented by the United Nations (UN) in Pakistan aimed at effectively managing migration, systematically combating human trafficking, and protecting human rights.

Within the framework of this initiative, the UN Network on Migration (UNNM) has officially launched operations. This platform unites various UN agencies, government bodies, and representatives of civil society to form a unified approach to addressing challenges.

The network’s activities are based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set until 2030 and the Global Compact for Migration. Its main goal is to ensure that migration is carried out in safe, legal, and humane ways.

The UN's Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Muhammad Yahya, has been appointed as the head of UNNM. According to him, this project will serve as an important platform for improving policies and practices in the field of migration.

Muhammad Yahya stated: “Through this network, we aim to protect the interests of migrants, promote fair treatment, and prevent human trafficking.”

As part of this new network, for the first time, a Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MMPTF) for migration has also been established. This fund aims to finance comprehensive measures against human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and violations of migrant rights in the country.

The fund’s direction will be shaped based on a “whole-of-society” approach. This means that not only the government, but also the private sector, civil society, NGOs, and international organizations will share responsibility.
