The Afghan government officially ended search and rescue operations following the powerful and extensive earthquake that struck on August 31. This was reported to Al Jazeera by Qudratullah Abu Hamza, the governor of Kunar province.
According to the governor, the search and rescue efforts for survivors in the aftermath of the earthquake have been fully completed. The death toll from the disaster has risen to 2,204, with nearly 4,000 people sustaining injuries of varying severity.
The official in charge of the region where the earthquake's epicenter was located also emphasized that the government is facing a critical shortage of tents for temporary housing of affected populations and evacuees. Nevertheless, rescuers and local residents made tremendous efforts to provide necessary aid, searching for survivors under life-threatening conditions.
Experts and international organizations believe that assessing the damage from this earthquake in Afghanistan and addressing the needs of the victims may require an extended period. The government and international organizations continue to collaborate in providing medical assistance, food, and shelter to those affected.
