A rare “blood moon” eclipse will be observed in Russia

A unique astronomical event – the “blood moon” eclipse – will be visible in the skies of Russia. Its peak will occur at 21:12 Moscow time, at which point the Moon will be completely shrouded in darkness. According to experts, the next such total eclipse will only happen again in seven years.

According to the Moscow Planetarium, this phenomenon is called the “blood moon” because, as the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, it gradually loses its brightness and takes on a reddish hue.

This spectacle will be observable not only in Russia, but also in Australia, India, and Central Asian countries. Part of the total phase will also be visible in Europe, East Asia, Africa, and New Zealand. However, residents of South and North America will not be able to witness this eclipse.

Astronomers explain that during a total eclipse, the Earth lies between the Sun and the Moon. At this moment, Earth’s atmosphere acts like a giant lens: light passing through it loses most of its shortwave components – blue and green – while predominantly transmitting red wavelengths, which give the Moon its distinctive blood-like color.
