Protest in Nepal turns into bloody clash: 14 people killed

In Nepal, public discontent has intensified, and major protests ended in a bloody tragedy. On September 8, according to “The Kathmandu Post,” 14 people died after police opened fire on demonstrators.

The cause of the incident was the government’s sharp decision. Authorities decided to ban the activities of major social networks that had not registered with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology within the specified time. Platforms and services such as Meta (Facebook, Instagram), Alphabet (YouTube), X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and LinkedIn were banned.

One of the representatives of the main opposition forces in parliament — a member of Nepal’s “Communist” Party (Maoist Center) Hit Raj Pande — stated that this decision was absolutely unacceptable. In his opinion, shutting down social networks not only restricts freedom of speech but could also lead to major unrest and clashes in the country.

Afterwards, protesters gathered in the New Baneshwar district to demonstrate against the restrictions and government corruption. However, what began as a peaceful rally quickly turned into a sharp confrontation. Police used force to disperse the demonstrators and eventually opened fire.

According to official data, 14 people were killed during the clashes, and more than 80 were injured. At least 10 of them are reported to be in critical condition.

Experts note that this incident will further deepen political instability in Nepal and bring the government’s hardline policy under strong criticism. The public is demanding that the authorities immediately lift the restrictions and restore peace.
