A major archaeological discovery with great historical significance has been made in the United Kingdom. Archaeologists have uncovered 317 human skeletons during excavations at the site of the former Debenhams department store in Gloucester. This was reported by Popular Mechanics.

According to the information, archaeological research was carried out because a new campus of the University of Gloucester is currently being built on this site. The excavations were conducted by Cotswold Archaeology, which had previously discovered more than 80 Roman-era graves in the same area.

Experts believe that most of the bodies date back to the Middle Ages. Alongside the remains, various everyday items were found — smoking pipes, fragments of wine bottles, and other household objects. These discoveries suggest that the area was actively used during the later medieval period.

Preliminary dental analysis revealed that people of that era consumed a large amount of sugar, providing new insights into their lifestyle and dietary habits.

“Gloucester truly holds immense historical wealth. Every time we work here, we uncover new and significant findings,” said project leader Cliff Bateman.

It has been announced that in September an exhibition of the discovered artifacts will be organized at the new campus. However, the human remains will not be put on display.

This discovery is regarded as an important event that further enriches the history of Britain, with scientists noting that many more secrets may yet be revealed.
