In recent years, sharp demographic changes have been observed in Russia. According to the results of a study conducted by Civixplorer, the proportion of men in the country’s population has significantly decreased.
Women outnumber men
The 2024 report noted that 63 percent of Russia’s population are women, while only 37 percent are men. Experts cite one of the main reasons for this situation as the ongoing war with Ukraine since 2022 and the losses suffered in it.
The study also listed other countries where women outnumber men, similar to Russia. For example:
USA — 52.7% women, 47.3% men;
Brazil — 53.3% women, 46.7% men;
Bangladesh — 53.8% women, 46.2% men;
Mexico — 54.4% women, 45.6% men;
Japan — 55.5% women, 44.5% men;
Germany — 52.3% women, 47.7% men;
Thailand — 55% women, 45% men.
A large gap among pensioners
According to data published in May of this year, in Russia women of retirement age are almost twice as many as men. Based on information from the Social Fund of Russia, the country has 41,169,800 pensioners. Of them, 13,845,500 are men, while 27,324,300 are women.
Demographic risks
Officials emphasize that such inequality affects not only the balance of the population but can also cause serious problems in economic development, the labor market, and social policy. The disruption of demographic balance indicates the likelihood that in the future Russia may face even greater social challenges.
