The French president announced on Monday that Paris would officially recognize the State of Palestine within the framework of UN General Assembly events. He emphasized that this step is seen as "part of a broader peace initiative in the region."
"I met and negotiated with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Recognition of the Palestinian state is the best way to isolate Hamas," Macron said. At the same time, he described Israel's desire to seize Palestinian lands on the western bank of the Jordan River as a "red line."
For reference: Palestine is currently recognized by 148 UN member states. Palestinian embassies and permanent missions operate in 95 countries around the world.
