Amazon has reached a record settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for deceiving its customers, Kommersant reported.
According to the report, the company will pay the government a $1 billion fine and an additional $1.5 billion in compensation to affected consumers.
The FTC filed a lawsuit against Amazon in mid-2019. The regulator accused the company of “knowingly deceiving” users for years by enrolling them in Amazon Prime subscriptions without their consent. This subscription provides access to Amazon’s streaming video service, free delivery, and other premium services, costing $139 per year.
Amazon denies any wrongdoing, emphasizing that its disclosure practices fully comply with industry standards and that the subscription mechanism is understandable to most customers.
