The UN appealed to Kyrgyzstan: "Do not return to the death penalty!"

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called on the Kyrgyz government to abandon its plans to reinstate the death penalty.

According to Turke, such strict measures do not reduce the level of crime, but, on the contrary, contradict human rights principles. He called on Kyrgyzstan to remain committed to its international obligations and to further strengthen efforts to ensure the inviolability of human life.

The High Commissioner emphasized that the death penalty is an unacceptable measure not only from a legal, but also from a moral and social point of view. He noted that this measure will also negatively affect the country's image and reputation in the international arena.

As a reminder, the death penalty in Kyrgyzstan was officially abolished in 2007, and the issue of its reinstatement is currently being discussed at the parliamentary level.
