Preparations for the Trump-Putin meeting have been suspended - what's the reason?

Preparations for the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest have been temporarily suspended. According to a White House source for NBC News reporter Garret Haake, Washington considers both sides "not yet ready for negotiations."

According to the journalist, although the telephone conversation between Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov was "productive," Trump preferred to postpone the negotiations for now. The White House also officially confirmed that the president does not plan to meet with Putin anytime soon.

A CNN source wrote that Russia's "extremely maximalist position" was the reason for the postponement of the summit. According to sources, Rubio and Lavrov had different views on resolving the Ukrainian conflict.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also commented on this. According to Sergey Ryabkov, "there is currently no agreement on the exact time or place of such a meeting."

Trump, after meeting with Zelenskyy, proposed "freezing the situation on the front in Ukraine on the existing line." Although this proposal was approved by Ukrainian and European leaders, Moscow considers it contrary to previous agreements between Trump and Putin.

Lavrov emphasized that Washington's calls for an immediate ceasefire are an attempt to cover the root causes of the conflict. "If you just stop, history will forget the real reasons," he said.

Thus, the fate of the upcoming high-level summit in Budapest remains uncertain.
