On November 1, 2025, a smoking ban came into force in the Maldives for everyone born after January 1, 2007, writes The Guardian.
"According to the new rules, individuals born on or after January 1, 2007, are prohibited from buying, consuming, or selling tobacco products in the Maldives," officials stated. This step was taken this year at the initiative of President Muhammad Muizzu.
Now all types of tobacco products are banned in the Maldives and for younger generations. Store employees check the age of customers before the sale.
It is noted that the restriction also applies to tourists.
The country's Ministry of Health stated that the ban "protects public health and helps raise a generation free from tobacco."
Officials note that the Maldives are the first country in the world to implement a "national ban on tobacco consumption for several generations."
The Maldives also maintain a ban on the import, sale, distribution, storage, and use of electronic cigarettes and vaping products.
