A devastating typhoon in the Philippines has claimed the lives of over 140 people

The powerful Typhoon Kalmaegi, which hit the central and southern regions of the Philippines, has become one of the most devastating natural disasters in the country's history. According to official data, at least 140 people died as a result of the incident, and another 127 citizens went missing. AFP reported this, citing local government sources.

The Philippine National Civil Defense Authority has officially confirmed 114 casualties, while the Cebu province administration announced that another 28 people have died.

According to the Associated Press, President Ferdinand Marcos has declared a state of emergency across the country due to the severity of the situation.

The natural disaster came with heavy downpours, hurricanes, and multi-meter waves, putting the coastal population at great risk. About 400 thousand people were evacuated from dangerous areas. It is noted that the height of the waves in the sea reached 4 meters. Currently, the typhoon is moving towards Vietnam.

For reference, the Philippines experiences an average of about 20 typhoons of various strengths annually. In 2025, this figure has increased significantly - at least 3-5 more typhoons are expected by the end of the year.
