Guinea-Bissau is now in the grip of serious political instability. President Sissoko Embalo was arrested at the presidential palace shortly after his statement about winning the election. Reporting this to Jeune Afrique, he called the incident a "coup d'état."
According to the publication's sources, the arrests were not limited to the president himself. General Biare Na Ntan, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, his deputy Mamadu Ture, and Interior Minister Boche Kande were also detained. This action indicates an increase in serious pressure on the security system and public administration in the country.
On November 23, presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Guinea-Bissau. Twelve candidates competed for the presidency, including incumbent President Embalo. At the same time, the fact that opposition leader Domingos Simoyes Pereira did not receive permission to participate as a candidate indicates the pre-existing tense political climate in the country.
The official results were expected to be announced by the election commission on November 28. However, Embalo announced his victory ahead of schedule, taking the political process to a new level. Following his statement, AFP and Reuters sources reported gunshots were heard around the presidential palace and the National Election Commission building.
The situation in the country remains uncertain - political competition, the reaction of military structures, and the international reaction will determine how the crisis in Guinea-Bissau will develop. The local population and the international community continue to watch the continuation of events with concern.
