Ukrainian naval drones hit two Russian tankers in the Black Sea, both of which are under sanctions. The tankers were heading to Novorossiysk port to load oil for foreign markets. A Security Service of Ukraine official said the tankers, Kairos and Virat, were empty.
Officials said the drones struck the tankers, causing strong explosions and fires. Video footage shows both tankers sustained serious damage and were effectively taken out of service. This dealt a significant blow to Russia’s oil transportation system.
Ukraine continues to call on the West to take action against Russia’s “shadow fleet,” which helps export large volumes of oil and fund its war.
The tankers are on the sanctions list, and their operations have been stopped.
