Pistorius: Arctic security is important for NATO and the US

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on January 13 in Berlin, during a meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, that NATO and the Bundeswehr should strengthen their involvement in ensuring security in the Arctic. In his view, the situation in the Arctic region—including threats from Russia and China and US territorial claims over Greenland—creates conditions that further complicate security in Europe.
According to Pistorius, the Arctic needs reinforced defense because Russia’s growing military presence is increasing risks in the region. He specifically stressed that strategic sea lanes between Greenland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom are crucial for North Atlantic security. The minister noted that in a potential conflict, Russia could use these routes to isolate America from Europe and Europe from America.
Pistorius said Arctic security matters not only to US interests but to NATO as a whole. He voiced support for establishing a joint NATO mission to monitor Arctic waters. “It’s about surveillance, patrolling, and being able to see what is happening underwater and in the air,” Pistorius said.
After the German defense minister’s remarks, attention turns to US President Donald Trump’s threat to annex Greenland. Citing military threats from Russia and China in the Arctic, he justified territorial claims over Greenland and stressed that the United States takes the issue seriously.
Pistorius’s and Trump’s views complement each other. Both emphasize the strategic importance of ensuring security in the Arctic and increasing the responsibility of NATO members.
