US President Donald Trump has not abandoned his intention to take control of Greenland, attributing it to ensuring regional security and curbing the influence of Russia and China. The controversy over the acquisition of the world's largest island has reached a new stage: Washington intends to captivate the people of Copenhagen and Greenland not only with political pressure but also with enormous financial offers.
Greenland's price: from billions to trillions
Trump has already instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to develop an official proposal for the island's acquisition. How much does this land of glaciers cost?
- Historical comparison: in 1803, Louisiana was purchased for 15 million dollars, and in 1867, Alaska was purchased for 7.2 million dollars. Today's Greenland is projected to require around $700 billion.
- Resource Potential: Analysts at the American Action Forum estimate the island's value at several trillion dollars, taking into account its natural resources and real estate value.
- Treasures worth 4.4 trillion: Studies in 2025 show that the total value of minerals and energy resources on the island exceeds 4.4 trillion dollars.
Can the US afford to buy it?
Financially, this is not a big problem for the USA. For a country with an annual defense budget of $850 billion and a gross domestic product of $31 trillion, a deal worth several tens of billions of dollars will not burden the budget. However, the legal and political side of the matter is quite complicated:
- Sovereignty: Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark and no trade is conducted without the consent of its inhabitants.
- Resistance of the population: Despite reports that local residents were promised up to $100,000 to join the United States, the majority of Greenlanders are completely against it. They want absolute independence, not colonial rule.
Why does Washington need this island?
The depths of Greenland are rich in modern technologies and rare resources vital for "green" energy:
- For batteries: Graphite and nickel deposits are of strategic importance in the production of electric vehicles.
- Defense and electronics: Rare earth elements are essential for high-tech weapons and wind turbines.
- Metals: Gold, copper, iron ore, and zinc deposits are widespread along the coast.
The geological structure of Greenland is extremely ancient, and the spectrum of minerals that ensure the economic security of Europe and North America is very wide. However, the extremely cold climate and lack of infrastructure make it difficult to extract these resources.

Donald Trump's ambitions for Greenland are aimed not only at expanding land, but also at establishing control over future technologies. But in the 21st century, the practice of acquiring territories is not only complex, but can also be perceived by the international community as colonial.
