Historical step in Syria: Kurdish language granted state language status

The tension between Syria's transitional government and Kurdish military structures was replaced by an important political agreement. As the country's army took control of strategic areas east of Aleppo, President Ahmad al-Shar'a signed a historic decree officially recognizing the rights of the Kurdish people.

Military control and troop retreat

Syrian government troops have established full military control over the city of Deir Khafir, located 50 kilometers from Aleppo. The "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDK), which had been guarding the area in recent years, announced their retreat to the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.

  • US mediation: The withdrawal of Kurdish forces was carried out after negotiations with US representatives. SDK leader Mazlum Abdi called the decision "a response to the calls of friendly countries and mediators."
  • Safety measures: The area is currently being cleared of mines. As a result, about 4 thousand people were temporarily evacuated to safe places.

Historic decree: Kurdish language and Navruz holiday

President Ahmad al-Shar'a made unprecedented decisions in Syrian history. In 1946, for the first time since the country's independence, the status of the Kurdish people was officially elevated:

  • Language status: Kurdish has gained the status of the state language in Syria.
  • National holiday: The new year of the Kurds - Navruz - was declared a national holiday.
  • Restoration of Justice: The decree emphasized that the Kurds are an "inseparable part" of Syria and that the years of oppression under previous regimes have come to an end.

Future challenges and oil reserves

Although the issue of language and holidays has been resolved, the Kurdish leadership considers this only a "first step." They demand that these privileges be enshrined in a new constitution, not a temporary decree.

  • Economic factor: The northeastern regions of Syria are rich in oil reserves, and the issue of control there remains on the agenda.
  • Integration into the army: According to the agreement signed in March 2025, Kurdish formations were to become part of the Syrian state army. However, even after a year, this process is proceeding slowly, and the parties accuse each other of violating the agreement.

According to experts, this "political campaign" of al-Sharia is an important strategic step towards preserving the integrity of the country and ending long-standing internal conflicts.

In your opinion, can granting Kurdish the status of a state language finally put an end to the long-standing internal conflicts in Syria?
