Trump’s Nobel Letter Surprised Europe Too

Trump’s Nobel Letter Surprised Europe Too

Reports say that U.S. President Donald Trump, in a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, stated that after not being awarded the Nobel Prize he is no longer “obliged to care only about peace.” It is noted that the letter’s text was published by PBS correspondent Nick Schifrin and then relayed to a number of government leaders via European ambassadors in Washington.

In the letter, Trump stressed that he considers himself worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize for “stopping several wars,” but since the award was not given, he will now put U.S. interests first. In the same vein, he moved on to Greenland, reportedly making tough statements about its security and control.

Against this backdrop, the dispute around Greenland intensified further, and reports also spread that European leaders sharply criticized the U.S. president’s threats over duties (tariffs). A number of countries are said to have issued statements of “full solidarity” with Denmark and Greenland—signaling the start of another cold “episode” in transatlantic relations.

The “Nobel” reference in the letter also recalls another fact: official sources recorded that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado.

In short, Trump’s political signals packed into a single letter—Nobel, tariffs, and Greenland—became a “loud signal” for Europe as well. The key question now is whether these statements will turn into real decisions or remain another phase of tough rhetoric.
