From now on, in Ukraine marriage may be allowed from age 14

A new draft law предусматривающий changes to the marriage age has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. According to the document, the main marriage age in the country will remain 18, but in some exceptional situations it is proposed to allow marriage starting from age 14. TASS reported this. It is reported that the initiative was developed within the framework of a new draft Civil Code, in which it is planned to introduce relevant amendments to the article “Right to marry”. The draft law is among the initiatives put forward by Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk.
According to the proposed norms, marriage for a 14-year-old person would be possible only on the basis of a court decision and only in exceptional cases such as pregnancy or the birth of a child. At the same time, the practice of allowing marriage from age 16 is also planned to be retained through a court decision. At present, Ukraine’s legislation sets the general minimum marriage age for men and women at 18. The draft law is currently at the initiative stage and must pass discussions in parliamentary committees as well as voting procedures.
Among specialists and the public, different opinions are being expressed on this issue: some view it as a social protection mechanism, while others emphasize that the risk of early marriages may increase.
