Golf star Tiger Woods, a 15-time major champion, was arrested in the US state of Florida after a traffic crash involving his Land Rover, Bloomberg reported, citing local authorities. According to investigators, Woods was driving at high speed when his vehicle collided with a pickup truck and overturned. Officials said no serious injuries were recorded in the accident, but the incident quickly led to a criminal case.
Authorities said Woods declined to undergo a medical examination after the crash. The county sheriff told reporters that officers at the scene noticed signs of intoxication. After determining he was at fault, law enforcement officers took him into custody and transferred him to the Martin County jail. The sheriff added that police had no doubt at the scene or later at the detention facility that alcohol had played a role in the case, and said that suspicion was confirmed.
Woods was held for about eight hours before being released on bail. The case drew wide attention because of his status as one of the most recognizable figures in world golf. Over the course of his career, he has built a reputation as one of the sport’s greatest players, winning 15 major titles and becoming a global sporting icon.
US President Donald Trump also commented on the incident, expressing sympathy and concern. Trump, who is known as a golf enthusiast, said he was very sorry about what had happened and referred to Woods as a close friend, a wonderful person and an extraordinary individual. He also noted that Woods had been dealing with health-related issues and said that, for the moment, the main known fact was that a car accident had taken place.
The crash has also revived memories of a previous serious road accident involving Woods five years earlier. In that earlier incident, his car left the roadway and was badly damaged, and emergency crews had to use special equipment to remove him from the vehicle. He was hospitalized then with much more significant injuries. Against that background, the latest accident is likely to renew public scrutiny over both his health and his conduct behind the wheel.
