In 2025, Istanbul ranked first as the city that lost the most time in traffic jams worldwide. In this major Turkish metropolis, drivers lost 118 hours in traffic jams throughout the year. This was reported by TRT Haber, citing data from Inrix's Global Road Traffic Index.
According to a study conducted by Inrix, Istanbul's traffic congestion level was the highest in the world in 2025. In the study, based on data collected from road sensors and cars, taking into account the population and size of cities, a rating of the number of hours lost in traffic was formed.
Leading behind Istanbul are Mexico City and Chicago. Mexican drivers lost 108 hours in traffic jams, while Chicago drivers lost 112 hours.
This index, compiled on the basis of data from more than 900 cities around the world, is an important source for analyzing global traffic and urban congestion.
