Croatian company Verne launches robotaxi service in Zagreb

Croatian company Verne is testing Europe's first robotaxi service in Zagreb. The project is being implemented in partnership with Uber and Pony.ai, a leader in autonomous driving technology. Currently, 10 driverless vehicles are serving a limited group of users in the city. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .
During the testing phase, an operator is present in each vehicle to ensure safety. They do not directly interfere with steering but take control in emergency situations. In a test ride conducted by AFP journalists, the automated system successfully performed a safe stop despite encountering unexpected obstacles.
According to Verne, about 300 passengers are currently using the service, with 90 percent rating the ride quality highly. Robotaxis use cameras, lidars, and radar sensors to create a 3D model of the environment and make real-time decisions. The service currently operates in the center of Zagreb, southern districts, and the airport area.
Currently, the ride price is 1.99 euros, though this is a temporary rate. The company plans to transition to fully driverless operation by the end of 2026. Verne is also negotiating to expand its services to 11 cities across the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East.
