Uzbekistan has resumed electricity exports to Afghanistan

Uzbekistan’s electricity supply to Afghanistan, which was interrupted due to a recent earthquake, has been fully restored. This was reported by Afghanistan’s energy company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS).

The earthquake that occurred on Monday night in Samangan and Balkh provinces damaged imported electricity transmission lines. Restoration efforts were complicated by repeated tremors, landslides, and strong winds.

Nevertheless, repair crews managed to promptly eliminate all malfunctions by Tuesday evening and ensured the full restoration of electricity supply. Currently, electricity is once again being supplied to Kabul as well as the provinces of Baghlan, Parwan, Panjshir, Kapisa, Logar, Paktia, Maidan-Wardak, Ghazni, Laghman, and Nangarhar.

Uzbekistan is the largest electricity supplier to Afghanistan. At present, construction is underway on the new “Surkhan – Pul-i-Khumri” 500 kV power transmission line.

This project will allow Uzbek electricity exports to increase several times over.
