Danger on suitcase wheels: what microbes do you bring home?

Danger on suitcase wheels: what microbes do you bring home?
In travel life, most of us don't think much about luggage cleanliness. After returning from vacation, we often place our suitcase right on the bed or carpet — but microbiologists warn this could be risky. According to Tengri Travel and the Daily Mail, modern studies show that suitcase wheels can be up to 58 times dirtier than a public toilet seat!

Suitcase — a magnet for microbes

In airports, streets, hotels, and transport, wheels come into contact with various surfaces, collecting invisible pathogens and microbes. Microbiologist Amy-May Pointer explains that suitcase wheels and bottoms are a “red carpet” for microbes. Travelers bring them home, and they can reach carpets, beds, even dining tables.

Clean luggage — safe home

To protect yourself from “traveling microbes,” microbiologists recommend a few simple but important rules:
  • Place your suitcase on a special stand or keep it in the bathroom;
  • Avoid dirty surfaces and puddles;
  • Wash your hands after touching the luggage, especially handles;
  • Wipe down wheels and the bottom with antiseptic wipes or soapy cloth;
  • If wheels are detachable, wash them with warm water and soap;
  • Vacuum and gently brush cloth covers with a cleaning solution to remove mold.

Also, after every trip, pay attention to the cleanliness of your baggage. Otherwise, after just a few days of travel, bacteria and pathogens may "enter" your home.

Another tip for travelers

After a bedbug outbreak in Paris in 2023, experts explained that the safest place for your suitcase in a hotel is the bathroom — it has fewer fabric surfaces and is less hospitable for microbes and parasites.

From Zamin.uz editorial:
During vacation, travel, or a business trip, think not only about relaxing but also about returning home safe and sound. Paying attention to suitcase hygiene can help avoid big problems. Every comfort and bit of health in your home is in your hands!
