The Myth of Left-Handers and Creativity: New Research Reveals the Truth
For centuries, myths about the talent of left-handers have held a firm place in public consciousness, reports hi-tech.mail.ru. Information that such prominent figures as Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, Napoleon, and Tesla were left-handed has led many to believe that there is an innate connection between creativity and left-handedness.

However, recent scientific analyses have seriously called these ideas into question. Psychologists from Cornell University, in particular the group led by Professor Daniel Casasanto, analyzed about a thousand scientific articles, and found that only 17 of them were sufficiently objective to assess this topic. According to their conclusion, there is no clear advantage or innate superiority in creativity associated with being left-handed.

Even in creative tests and professions, left-handers do not have an advantage. Meta-analysis results show that in some cases, right-handers even have a slight edge in solving creative problems or divergent thinking. The fact that there are relatively more left-handers among artists and musicians does not necessarily mean their proportion in these fields is higher than in society as a whole.

So why did the “left-handed genius” myth arise? According to scientists, this is due to statistical errors and people's tendency to generalize the most striking examples. After seeing a few famous left-handed artists or scientists, people tend to think this applies to everyone. In addition, there is a widespread belief that left-handers are more prone to mental illness, and this is also mistakenly linked to creativity.

Experts emphasize that left-handedness is neither a gift nor a curse, but simply a normal biological variation. There is no clear creative superiority among left-handers, and these myths are mainly connected with cultural stereotypes and random examples.
