What to consider when performing Qurbonlik

What to consider when performing Qurbonlik?

With Qurbon Hayiti in Uzbekistan falling on Wednesday, May 27, citizens are expected to have five consecutive days off. In this regard, the Muslim Board has issued important recommendations on the procedure, conditions, and etiquette of performing Qurbonlik.

It is stated that there are four main conditions for Qurbonlik to be obligatory: a person must be Muslim, free, possess the nisab amount, and be a resident. Qurbonlik is not considered obligatory for travelers.

Qurbonlik can only be performed with specific animals. Specifically, sheep, goats, cattle, and camels are considered suitable. While one person can sacrifice a sheep or goat, up to seven people are allowed to share a cow or camel.

The age of the animal is also important. Sheep must be at least six months old, cattle at least two years old, and camels at least five years old. Experts emphasize that it is preferable to choose a healthy, strong, and flawless animal.

Warnings were also issued regarding animals unsuitable for Qurbonlik. It is not permissible to sacrifice animals that are missing a large part of their ear, tail, or eye, or those that are extremely thin, sick, or lame.

The time for Qurbonlik begins after the Eid prayer and ends at sunset on the third day of Eid. It was also noted that giving money or the value of the animal instead of the sacrifice is considered charity, not Qurbonlik.

The Muslim Board reminded that it is important to observe etiquette when performing Qurbonlik. Specifically, it is recommended to have a sincere intention, for the person performing the sacrifice to refrain from cutting hair or shaving from the beginning of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah until the sacrifice, and to avoid causing pain to the animal and follow slaughtering rules.

At the same time, it was noted that aspects such as not sharpening the knife in front of the animal and not slaughtering in front of other animals are important parts of the culture of Qurbonlik.
