Alongside all the national teams qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Uzbekistan’s national football team has initiated thorough and serious preparations for its historic debut in the global tournament. Following FIFA’s draw ceremony, experts and commentators have actively begun analyzing the country's team’s prospects.
Competing in the major tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Uzbekistan's national team has been placed in Group “K.” The competition in this group is intense: Portugal and Colombia are included, both recognized as giants in world football. The third opponent will be determined through the playoff stage — either Jamaica, New Caledonia, or the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Elvin Kerimov, a commentator for Russia's Okko service, shared his thoughts after studying the draw results. He emphasized that while the group is challenging for Uzbekistan, it also presents a unique test and a strong source of motivation for the players.
— Portugal and Colombia are top-tier teams. The opponent coming from the playoffs might seem comparatively weaker than the others, but the group remains tough. Nevertheless, the most important thing is to enjoy the World Cup, showcase yourself to the world, and stay true to your style, — said Kerimov.
Additionally, he highlighted the team’s high level of motivation and enthusiasm. This will also be the first major tournament for head coach Fabio Cannavaro.
— Uzbekistan can deliver a respectable performance. The key is not to be intimidated by opponents, act confidently on the field, and maintain their unique style. These factors are decisive in such prestigious short-format tournaments, — the commentator added.
When will Uzbekistan debut?
Uzbekistan’s first match in the World Cup is scheduled for June 18 in Mexico against Colombia. This game could potentially determine not only the group’s destiny but also set the tone for the team’s overall mood in the tournament.
On June 23, the national team will face a highly anticipated challenge against Portugal. The final group stage match will take place on June 27 in the United States against the team emerging from the playoffs.
This is a historic opportunity for Uzbekistan, which has made its way to the World Cup. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see how the team’s determination, character, and first steps on the global stage will unfold.
