Catalonia's Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has personally confirmed rumors about a strange request from the club's management. According to the Polish star, he was asked to deliberately score fewer goals on the field towards the end of the 2022/2023 season.
According to the footballer, the issue was related to financial aspects, more precisely, bonus payments. At that time, the club was in a difficult financial situation, every euro was calculated and it was important to avoid unnecessary expenses.
"I don't want to discuss everything openly. I respect Barcelona, everyone who works here. I knew very well what the team was in and I was ready for a lot for the good of the club. It was a question of bonuses - at that time every euro was important," Lewandowski said in an interview with the Rymanowski Live YouTube channel.
At the same time, he stressed that this situation did not affect him personally much. However, he did not hide the fact that there was an internal struggle: “Sometimes I asked myself - should I score a goal or not? But it was a decision made for the team,” the striker added.
For information, Lewandowski joined the “blue and purple” team from the German club Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022. In his debut season, he played in 46 matches in all competitions and scored 33 goals. If his performance had been even higher, Barcelona would have had to pay the German club several million euros in additional bonuses, according to the terms of the contract.
This confession once again showed that Lewandowski has complex decisions that he makes not only on the field, but also in the interests of the team.
