Why Vadim Abramov turned down a $1 million contract

Former head coach of the Uzbekistan national team and current manager of Samarkand’s “Dinamo” club, Vadim Abramov, spoke about an unsuccessful experience related to his work in Kazakhstan. This was reported by upl.uzreports.
The specialist shared these remarks on the “Turaev’s Feints” podcast. According to him, in 2013 he joined FC “Astana” as head coach, but two weeks later the cooperation ended due to a change in the club’s management.
Abramov noted that he spent a week assessing the team’s internal situation and saw the problem was very serious: there were almost no homegrown players in the squad, and most players were on loan. Despite this, he was offered a $1 million contract.
“The task was to become champions, but there are no players in the team—everyone is on loan. No normal coach would sign such a contract. Later I may have regretted it, but at the time I said: ‘Where are your players? Who am I supposed to play with?’” Abramov was quoted as saying.
The coach also added that the then club head was not particularly close to football. He said that despite the management change, he could have stayed and signed the contract, but since he did not see any prospects, he decided to leave the team.
“Besides, it was very cold in Astana, and I wanted to return to Tashkent,” the specialist concluded.
