Famous UFC commentator Joe Rogan, in a new interview, compared Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev, highlighting each fighter’s unique traits and analyzing their professional level.
According to Rogan, Khabib is one of the greatest fighters of all time—there’s no doubt about it. However, there is a difference between them. Rogan said Khabib’s striking was very good, but Islam’s work in the stand-up is on a higher level. He added that Islam has strikes and skills Khabib didn’t have—for example, the technique needed to knock out Alex Volkanovski.
"Islam is a completely different level—he’s one step above. He can knock you out standing or on the ground, he can choke you, he can take you down. For his weight class he’s very big and strong. There are so many factors. Even when you’re striking, fighting him forces you to constantly think about his advantage in wrestling," Rogan said.
Islam Makhachev fought his last bout in November 2025. In that fight, he defeated Jack Della Maddalena to become the UFC welterweight champion.
Both fighters operate at a very high technical level, but Rogan specifically emphasized Makhachev’s versatility and elite wrestling.
