Guardiola seeks new defender as race for Araujo heats up

Manchester City have begun working on strengthening their defensive line ahead of the summer transfer window. According to reports in the Portuguese press, Pep Guardiola's team is making a serious effort to sign Sporting defender Maxi Araujo.
Interestingly, the main rival for Manchester City in the race for the talented Uruguayan footballer could be the city's other giant, Manchester United.
The 26-year-old Maxi Araujo is considered one of the most consistent and reliable players for the Lisbon club this season. He demonstrated his high level, especially in Champions League matches against European giants like Arsenal and PSG.
Experts highly value his defensive reliability, precision in tackling, and versatility. Araujo can play effectively not only as a left-back but also in central midfield, making him a perfect fit for Pep Guardiola's system.
According to the famous Portuguese publication A Bola, the two Manchester clubs are currently seen as the primary contenders to acquire the player.
At the same time, it was previously reported that Tottenham and Chelsea had also shown interest in Maxi Araujo. The London clubs even sent special scouts to monitor the player's performances.
However, the Sporting board has no intention of letting their player go yet. On the contrary, the club plans to keep him longer by offering better terms and a higher salary.
The player's current contract runs until 2029 and includes a release clause of £69 million. Therefore, it is clear that his transfer will not be easy.
Nevertheless, it is said that the good relationship between Manchester City's key sporting figure Hugo Viana and the Lisbon club could give the 'Citizens' a certain advantage in negotiations.
Football analysts believe that if this transfer goes through, Maxi Araujo could become one of the most exciting defenders in the Premier League. His versatility and ability to play at a high tempo are crucial factors for Guardiola's style of football.
