Florentino Pérez clarifies rumors regarding Xabi Alonso's departure and José Mourinho

In an interview following his high-profile press conference, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez commented on Xabi Alonso's short tenure at the club and the rumors surrounding a potential return of José Mourinho. Pérez emphasized that hiring Alonso was not a mistake, but noted that the lack of a pre-season and a congested schedule led to a decline in the team's physical condition, causing significant issues. This is reported by Goal.com reports .

Xabi Alonso, who took charge of Real Madrid in the summer of 2025 after his success with Bayer Leverkusen, was dismissed mid-season following a defeat in the Super Cup and unsatisfactory results in La Liga. Disagreements with Vinicius Junior are also seen as one of the factors that led to his departure.

The team failed to find stability under Alvaro Arbeloa, who replaced Alonso. Their elimination from the Copa del Rey by Albacete and the defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League made it almost certain that Arbeloa will leave the club at the end of the season.

Numerous reports have circulated in the press about José Mourinho's return to Real Madrid, with some experts even calling it a done deal. However, Florentino Pérez denied these rumors, stating that while he respects Mourinho's contributions to the club's history, no decisions have been made yet, and he does not make coaching appointments unilaterally.
