The US company Joby Aviation has signed a partnership agreement with the British airline Virgin Atlantic to launch an electric air taxi service in the UK. The company has officially announced this.
Thus, the UK will become the seventh country in the world to introduce commercial air taxis. Joby Aviation will first focus on the US and UAE markets, and then plans to enter the British market.
According to reports, the initial tests of the electric air taxi service in Dubai will begin at the end of this year or early next year. In the US, this service was planned to be launched in 2025, but there have been delays due to administrative obstacles. The company is in the process of obtaining certification from the US aviation authorities, but has not yet received final approval.
To start air taxi services in the UK, Joby Aviation needs to obtain certification from the British Aviation Authority. This application was submitted in 2022. Virgin Atlantic will become the only official agent of Joby Aviation in the country.
The main idea of the project is to quickly and conveniently transport passengers from city centers to airports using electric air taxis. In the initial phase, flights will be carried out between London Heathrow and Manchester airports. Other routes are planned to be launched in the future.
Joby Aviation aircraft are designed to carry one pilot, four passengers and small cargo. These modern electric air taxis can travel at a speed of 320 kilometers per hour. This will allow you to cover the distance between the cities of Leeds and Manchester in just 15 minutes.
While the service is still a long way from being fully launched, Joby Aviation is aiming to establish itself in the global market. In the future, the company has announced plans to launch air taxi services not only in the UK and the US, but also in the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Japan, India and Australia.
