The results of a new scientific study conducted by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have shown that artificial intelligence has a negative impact on the human brain and cognitive activity. LADBible reports this. The findings of this research have surprised many and call for caution in the use of technology.
As part of the experiment, a total of 54 students were asked to write essays and divided into three groups: the first group was allowed to use ChatGPT and other large language models. The second group used internet search engines, and the third completed the tasks without any assistance.
During the study, each student’s brain activity was constantly monitored using electroencephalography. It was found that students who regularly used artificial intelligence systems experienced a sharp decline in brain activity and cognitive functions. They had difficulty remembering information, could not fully and clearly express their thoughts, and showed a significant decrease in mental effort. This effect was especially evident in students who used AI tools regularly over a four-month period.
Another interesting result of the study is that when students changed groups, i.e., returned to working independently after using artificial intelligence, their cognitive functions did not recover quickly. At the same time, students who initially worked without artificial intelligence and then started using it showed an increase in performance at first, but over time their results also declined.
Experts note that artificial intelligence can be a useful tool for human life, but excessive use can seriously harm a person’s mental abilities and critical thinking development. This is considered a dangerous trend, especially in educational institutions, as it can lead to a decline in the quality of education.
The study also examined the environmental impact of artificial intelligence technologies. It was found that systems like ChatGPT require large amounts of energy and resources. To cool servers, about 50 ml of water is needed for every 10–50 requests. Excessive text and unnecessary queries increase the amount of data processing, further increasing energy consumption.
It should be noted that earlier, the ChatGPT system identified a British woman’s need for urgent medical help based on a photo of her hand and advised her to go to the hospital immediately. While such cases highlight the positive aspects of artificial intelligence, they once again confirm the need to thoroughly study its negative consequences. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
