According to a new analytical report prepared by the Microsoft AI Economy Institute, Uzbekistan possesses significant but still unrealized potential in the field of artificial intelligence. Research results show that the country is at the initial stage of integrating artificial intelligence technologies.
The current state of digital and energy infrastructure has been identified as a key obstacle to the rapid development of this sector. Institute analysts assessed the level of penetration of artificial intelligence technologies in Uzbekistan at 5.7%, which indicates an early stage of adoption of these technologies.
The report highlights that Uzbekistan is not among the countries where artificial intelligence is actively used in major areas such as the economy, education system, and public governance. The main factors hindering the digitalization process are not only limited infrastructural capacity but also a shortage of data in the Uzbek language.
The lack of large volumes of data in Uzbek makes it difficult to create and train localized artificial intelligence models. The document provides specific indicators illustrating the existing issues.
For example, the level of electricity supply in the country is around 80%, which can pose a serious barrier for energy-demanding computational processes. Although the level of internet usage ranges from 80% to 100%, the Digital Adoption Index does not exceed 40%.
Additionally, the country currently lacks dedicated platforms necessary for big data processing centers and modern artificial intelligence systems. However, Microsoft specialists maintain an optimistic outlook for Uzbekistan’s prospects.
Reforms in the field of digitalization and the development of a national strategy for artificial intelligence are creating a solid foundation for future growth. Microsoft experts suggest focusing on several priority areas to unlock the country’s potential.
First, it is necessary to expand data transmission networks and increase computing capacities. Second, developing language models adapted for Uzbek and other widely spoken languages in the country is of great importance.
Third, it is required to systematically raise the level of digital literacy among the population. Finally, another factor for success is creating and supporting a favorable environment for startups involved in developing and implementing artificial intelligence technologies.
According to analysts, the consistent implementation of these steps will allow Uzbekistan not only to improve the efficiency of public administration but also to stimulate the development of innovative sectors. This, in turn, will help strengthen the country’s competitiveness in the Central Asian region.
