Russian hackers are targeting Signal users

Cybersecurity researcher Donncha Ó Cearbhaill identified a suspicious message sent to his Signal account. The message, purportedly from Signal security, claimed a data breach had occurred on the user's device and requested a special code to prevent it. The head of Amnesty International's Security Lab immediately recognized this as a scam, as reported by Techcrunch.com reports.

Instead of ignoring the attack, Ó Cearbhaill decided to investigate further. The researcher discovered that a hacking group linked to the Russian government was behind these phishing attempts. The hackers tried to trick users into linking their accounts to devices under their control.

The US CISA agency, along with UK and Dutch intelligence services, had previously issued warnings about this type of cyberattack. According to Der Spiegel, high-ranking politicians in Germany have also been affected by this campaign.

The researcher revealed that this hacking campaign targeted over 13,500 users. Signal has warned its users about the phishing threat, advising them never to enter codes via suspicious links.
