Blackbird drone reaches 730 km/h, matching aircraft speeds

Two American drone enthusiasts recently conducted a test flight of a modified drone codenamed Blackbird in an open field. The device reached a maximum speed of 730 kilometers per hour (453 mph) during the flight, setting an unofficial world record. For context, most commercial airliners travel at an average speed of 885 km/h. This was reported by Ixbt.com .
The project creators previously set a record of 626 km/h in December 2025, but that result was later surpassed by others. To reclaim the top spot, the engineers equipped their drone with entirely new propellers and showcased the testing process on their YouTube channel.
During a test flight with a tailwind, the drone reached 453 mph, exceeding the initial target of 441 mph. When accounting for wind speed (34 mph), the drone's net speed was 674 km/h. A final test against a headwind recorded a speed of 640 km/h.
The average speed of the two-way flights was 685 km/h. Although this figure fell slightly short of the expected 434 mph target, it successfully broke the current world record. This technological achievement once again proves the expanding capabilities of drones in the aviation sector.
