Ghost Hackers: The greatest unsolved mysteries in the world of cybersecurity

Looking back at the long history of hacking, we encounter many data breaches that remain unsolved even after years or decades. While cybercriminals like LAPSUS$, who attacked giants like Microsoft and NVIDIA, or members of state-sponsored hacking groups from Russia and China have been identified and put on wanted lists, some groups remain shrouded in mystery. The culprits, motives, and answers behind the most intriguing cases in cybersecurity history are still missing. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .

Among these mysterious events, one of the strangest episodes involves the Shadow Brokers group. This enigmatic group suddenly appeared on the internet, released an arsenal of hacking tools believed to belong to the US National Security Agency (NSA), and then vanished. In the summer of 2016, at the height of cyberattacks related to the US presidential election, the group appeared on Twitter and began tagging several media outlets in their posts.

The document released by the group mentioned an "Equation Group cyber-weapon auction." For context, Equation Group is a secret hacking unit believed to be directly managed by the NSA. In their posts, the hackers asked: "Attention government sponsors of cyber warfare and those who profit from it! How much will you pay for your enemy's cyber-weapons?" and demanded at least one million Bitcoin.

When security researchers analyzed these tools, they confirmed that they were incredibly sophisticated cyber-weapons and were most likely stolen from the NSA. The names of some programs matched those in classified documents leaked by Edward Snowden. The broken English and strange communication style used by the Shadow Brokers raised suspicions for many — they were likely acting that way on purpose to hide their true identity.

During their activity, the group contacted a journalist only once and gave a short interview. Shortly after, they released all the stolen tools to the public. To this day, who is behind this group and what their main goal was remains one of the greatest mysteries for cybersecurity experts.
